Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy (also termed “Upper Endoscopy”) is a medical procedure that examines the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract, which includes the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum (first portion of the small intestine).

An endoscope is a long, thin, flexible tube containing a video camera that is passed via the mouth to view the lining of the upper gastrointestinal system. Biopsies of the lining can be taken to investigate further.

Gastroscopy  is performed under a light general anaesthetic given by a specialist Anaesthetist. There is usually no experience or memory of the test and it is very low risk.

Vanessa performs Gastroscopy at Kareena Private Hospital and Kingsway Day Surgery.  Public patients will have access to procedures at Sutherland Hospital.  She provides “No-Gap” billing for all eligible privately insured patients.

Why is gastroscopy done?

Gastroscopy is used to investigate upper gastrointestinal issues such as reflux, nausea or vomiting, swallowing difficulties, abdominal pain, bloating, and anaemia.

A number of conditions can be diagnosed, managed and monitored with a Gastroscopy including:

  • Reflux Oesophagitis
  • Coeliac disease
  • Oesophageal stricture
  • Gastric or duodenal ulcer
  • Barrett’s Oesophagus
  • Tumours

If a cause for your symptoms isn’t identified by gastroscopy, Vanessa may arrange further investigation. This will look at structures not shown during gastroscopy such as the liver and pancreas.

After gastroscopy:

You won’t be able to drive for 24 hours following the anaesthetic and therefore you will need to make arrangements for a friend or family to pick you up. It is also requested that you be with someone for those 24 hours in case of unexpected events following the procedure.

Although adverse events are rare, early recognition is important. Vanessa will discuss the results of the test with you and family following the procedure. A written report is given and any later available results will be made available by either at subsequent office consultation, telephone, email or post.
